DR Solution Saves the Day
The Insurance company had a legacy database running on a Windows
NT4 computer. While the database was seldom accessed, it contained
the only, crucial records of a set of policies.
When the database suddenly ceased to be available,
BCC was
asked to investigate the problem and found that an over zealous
incompetent techie had decided that the computer should be replaced.
He moved one disk drive into the new case and destroyed the old machine, which
still held the second disk drive upon which the database was stored.
Fortunately BCC was able to rebuild the
database and recover all of the data, but the server still imposed a
major business risk - if the single hard drive holding the operating
System failed, there would be no way to recover.
1. Normal disk backup
Was not an option - NT4 only support backup to tape!
2. Catering for Disaster
BCC Solved this
problem by creating a Virtual Machine copy of PC. This solved a
whole bunch of issues:
1. As the OS got older, so it became less likely that it could be
moved to the new hardware currently available - there just weren't
any compatible drivers available for NT4. By moving the PC to a
virtual machine, it was now hardware agnostic, it no longer relied
on a hardware manufacturer's continued support for obsolete
software.
2. As the solution was no longer hardware based, but rather a set of
disk files, making backup copies was easy! No more risk! No more
hoping the disk drive would last forever.
3. For the first time, this legacy database was part of the Disaster
Plan.
Don't put your business at Risk!
Virtualize your critical servers!
With virtual servers, you are totally hardware
independent. Legacy solutions are no longer at risk by being reliant
on obsolete hardware.
But wait. There is more.
By virtualizing you will automatically see
-
An immediate return on your investment.
-
A saving in hardware costs, plus all the other benefits associated with a virtualized environment.
